Why teach?
Teaching was not something I always knew I wanted to do. I worked in the school system for 11 years prior to making my decision to earn my teaching degree. The exposure to the school setting did confirm that I wanted to teach. I chose Spanish becuse it was my native language and because there was a high need for it.
I am in the secondary level because I feel more suited to this age group and also because foreign language is generally not offered in lower grades. I really like the daily interaction and the look in a student’s eyes when they “get it”. It is a great feeling to know that we can affect others in a positive way and that something we do may make a difference in a child’s life.
I also teach because the more I teach it the more I learn about it. I love to learn new things also and this keeps me learning.

I think Spanish is a foreign language that one can certainly justify learning. Students would be able to see the benefit in learning it more than they would something like algebra. Now, more than ever, the Spanish language is spoken in so many places. By the way, I saw on Facebook where your students had stolen Pablo (I think that was his name). You must have a good rapport with them. Their relationship with you came through in their dialog. It sounds like teaching/learning must be fun in your classroom.

I agree that you learn more about your subject as you teach it. While teaching in my cooperative teacher’s social studies classroom, I learned so much about history as I prepared for lessons that I was amazed at everything I learned.

Gracias Joe! We do have a good time in class. However, we all have those tough days that we would like to put behind us.
Yes his name is Pablo and they took him as a joke. He showed up on the stage at graduation in cap and gown.
I do enjoy my students!
