Top 100 Tools for Learning
This is my third to attempt to post. My computer heats up and just blacks out without warning and I lose everything…. It’s a DELL notebook and my next one won’t be a dell. I would wlcome any suggestions on a good brand for a new notebook that’s not too expensive.
As I was reading through my gator this evening I came across a posting in OLDaily about learning tools and I had to check it out.
It seems that Jane Hart, a 25 year veteran in Higher Education and Corp. Training set up this Center for Learning and Performance, early this year to put together a directory of the best tools to be used for learning and /or performance. The list has grown to 1,700 plus tools, some free and some commercial. The most intersting to me was the top ten. These were chosen by survey and are listed in 3 different ways. By popularity, by type of tool and alphabetical order. the criteria by which they were chosn can be found in the website along with her email address for her assistance in any type of e learning that you may need.
The 100 list in order of popularity has the number of votes, link which gives all information about the tool and a description. As I look at the top 10, I notice that it has quit a few of the tools that we are using in our class. The 10 included a browser, a gator, an IM, a blog, a search engine, email, a prsentation software, and a word processor.
I have the following of those listed in the top 10: google search , PowerPoint, gmail, WordPress, google reader, and Word. There were also some I’m not familiar with but have heard about. Such as FireFox, delicious, sykes, Anyway, it was interesting to me but not surprising that we have been taught to use some of the most popular tools in the world at this current time in. There is also a place to leave your email to be put on the mailing list for the following year. I am going to explore the sites of some of the tools that I’m not familiar with. If you would like to see this report you may access it at the following link. I left my email address so I could continue to receive the reports as they come out.

I, too, am exploring the tools on this top 100 list. So far I like what I see and I am getting some great ideas for possible activities. Which one is your favorite tool?

Cool, Gloria. This is one of the most informative sites that I have seen. Thanks for all the good info. I’m going to sign up for the new reports, too.

I have one laptop and one tablet PC that I use. I gave up my desktop last summer for the comfort and convenience of a laptop. My laptop is a Compaq and my tablet PC is a Gateway. The Gateway has excellent battery life and does not heat up like the Compaq does. I got lucky and found my tablet PC in a pawn shop for $475. It came with a 30 day guarantee. I have used it for over a year to teach with and have had zero problems. When you are looking for a new one, go to sites like Consumer Reports and do lots of research before you buy. Also, if you live in a bigger shopping area, go try them out. I am particular on keyboard touch and screen sharpness. I highly recommend the glass type screens over the LCD screens for visibility. And no mattter would you buy, get a good external hard drive to back everything up.
