Internet Safety / Voice Thread…

Posted on September 8, 2007. Filed under: EDUC 685, EDUC685 article comment |

While reading through my gator I noticed several people had posted about internet safety for students and also about a site called Voice Thread. I decided to investigate because both sounded interesting to me. I found it on Remote Access.

The safety lesson was very good because it addressed many points of danger that some students and some teachers would not even think about.

The  other interesting point was Voice Thread. I am interested in this for my students  because it would be a great way to have them hear themselves speak in Spanish. They could set up an ongoing conversation and hear themselves and their peers as they grow in the language. It would be better than just taping themselves and listening because they could really put some thought into the whole process and make their presentation unique. It would give them a fun way to assess themselves using Spanish and continue to grow both in the language  and in technology.  I am going to check with our tech. dept. to see if we could possibly use this at school since we have so many sites blocked…  Good site!

Some form of security measure must be taken when students are cruising down the information superhighway. Back in the day it was programs like “Net Nanny” were used to help protect children from certain “red light districts” of the Web. Now, Voice Thread assumes the guard duty and protects students from those same areas. The only problem with these programs is that one way or another if a student wants to get through they are going to try hard. How effective is this program at keeping those students from hacking through the barriers?
